History
Anoka- Champlin Meals on Wheels has a long history of providing meal for neighbors throughout our community. In 1972, the Anoka– Champlin Ministerial Association founded our organization. On February 1, 1973, the first meals for neighbors in need were delivered in the communities ofAnokaand Champlin. Anoka- Champlin Meals on Wheels has worked in collaboration with Mercy Hospital to produce and distribute meals throughout our history, from a handful of meals on the first day to more than 120 meals today.
In 2008, our organization undertook major expansion. Upon hearing the North Anoka Meals on Wheels program would be closing at the end of June 2008, Anoka- Champlin Meals on Wheels Board of Directors resolved to take on the people being served by the North Anoka Meals on Wheels program. This expansion had immediate ramification:
-
A 50% increase in the number of neighbors served
-
A 2,275% increase in square miles covered (from 16 miles to more than 380)
-
Adding 15 new communities to our service deliver area
-
Doubling the number of routes driven by volunteers
-
Adding two satellite distribution centers
The increase in services continues. So far in 2011, we have seen a 10% increase in demand for services from neighbors in need. We anticipate serving more than 29,000 meals throughout the year.
Our commitment is to be a vital community partner, serving neighbors in need.
